The Two Towers Bloopers
Please note, many of these bloopers were taken from MovieMistakes.com
Gandalf and the Balrog
- When Gandalf confronts the balrog in FOTR, he says, "I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn."
When the camera majestically inspects the mountain peaks in the beginning of TTT, Gandalf can be heard saying, "I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of Anor," pause, grunt, "Go back to the shadow," pause,"The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn." - - Verified - In the first movie, Frodo screams 'Noooo' after Gandalf falls off the bridge of Khazad-Dum. In the flashback at the beginning of this movie, he screams before Gandalf falls.
- - Verified - When Gandalf falls off the bridge in Moria after the fight with the Balrog, his hands slip across smooth stone. In the close up when he says "Fly, you fools" the stone now has large cracks and ridges in it for him to hold on to.
Frodo and Sam in the Wilderness/ Taming of Smeagol
- Very near the start, when Frodo and Sam are talking, keep an eye on Sam's backpack. The blanket rolled up at the top of it moves up and down his back, without him adjusting it.
- - Verified - In the scene where Gollum first finds the two hobbits and attacks them for the ring, he gets Sam in a headlock. In the next shot, the arm around Sam's neck is obviously a normal-sized human man's arm. Then it turns back to Gollum's arm when Frodo pulls 'Sting'.
- In the first really big close-up of Frodo's face, when he's holding down Gollum, you can see the edges of his contacts.
- In the scene where Gollum is begging to be released from the leash, if you look carefully you can see the fabric of Frodo's cloak jumping around Gollum's computer-generated hand.
- - Verified - When Gollum is begging to be set free, his hair does not blow in the breeze, although the weeds and Frodo and Sam's hair does.
- When Gollum, Frodo, and Sam are traveling through the Dead Marshes, there is a scene where Frodo is "petting" the Ring. In shots from his point of view he is using his index finger but in shots where you can see his face. It is his middle finger.
- At the beginning of the sequence where Smeagol 'sends Gollum away' we see a shot of the Hobbits sleeping on the ground. This shot is the exact shot of the Hobbits sleeping shortly before they catch Gollum, only it's flipped. In fact it is wrong because when Gollum talks we see the Hobbits lying in the background, and their faces are not next to each other, Frodo is rather looking at Sam’s feet.
Merry, Pippin, and the Uruk-Hai
- In the wide shot where the Uruk-Hai are running with Merry and Pippin on their backs the Uruk with Pippin is In front of the Uruk with Merry but in the next shot they are side by side then again in the next wide shot Pippin is in front of Merry.
- - Verified - Merry and Pippin were bound when taken by the Uruk-Hai, and the bonds weren't cut until after they managed to escape during the fight. Yet, when the horse almost crashed down on Pippin, he had his arms spread out up near his face, not bound, even though they weren't cut until later.
- - Verified - When Merry and Pippin are with the Uruk-hai, and after they escape, Merry has a deep cut over his right eye. When he is in Fangorn, just before the orc threatening him gets stepped on by Treebeard the cut is over his left eye.
Running/Riders of Rohan
- At the beginning. Legolas informs Aragorn and Gimli that the Orc band is heading Northeast toward Isengard. Legolas might want to consult a map or compass; Isengard's to the North-WEST!
- - Verified - At the start of the film when Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli are running around Middle Earth, in an overhead shot you can see Gimli drop something that looks like a pouch, and he keeps on running like nothing happened.
- The first time we get to see Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, we see them running on top of a hill, with the camera sweeping over them. In that scene, Legolas' quiver is leaning on his left side - throughout the rest of the movie, it's on his right. Also Aragorn's sword is on his wrong side.
- Whilst Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are on the trail of Merry and Pippin at the beginning of the film there is a panning shot beside a mountain, when they are seen running. If you watch Orlando Bloom he slips on a rock and skids slightly before recovering his balance and running on. Surely Legolas, a member of the most graceful creatures on Middle-Earth, would be able to run over some rocks without slipping?
- - Verified - When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are chasing the Uruk-hai just before the Rohan riders appear, they run between two rocky outcrops over a ridge. Aragorn signals to hide, and almost at once the riders appear. Strangely Aragorn can hear Uruk-hai on foot 1 day's march away, but not a group of riders 30 seconds ride away. Legolas, famous for his eyesight, obviously forgot to have a look over the ridge where he might have spotted the riders.
- - Verified - When Aragorn calls out to the Riders of Rohan at their first meeting, he does so from behind some rocks. The next shot, when the riders start to surround Aragorn, Legolas & Gimli, these three are meters away from the rocks.
- In the shot where Eomer and his riders are raising their spears after Aragorn told them why they where in the Riddermark, look closely at Eomer's mouth. You can see it is moving as if he was talking. But in that shot there is no dialogue.
- - Verified - When Eomer and his troops talk to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli there is a rider on a distinctive white horse in the group but later on when Eomer rides away the horse has gone.
- - Verified - When Eomer is talking to Aragorn and takes off his helmet you can see some fake hair that had been glued to it come off with it. It is NOT part of the plume from his helmet.
- - Verified - When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli meet Eomer and the Riders of Rohan, Eomer says that they burnt all the bodies of the Orc company. He points towards where they Orcs are piled and from a distance there is a shot of smoke rising from a fire. There is no forest nearby. When the travelers reach the pile of dead Orcs they are only yards from the eaves Fangorn Forest, which is vast and would surely have been visible even from a distance.
- When Eomer is mounting his horse after giving Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli the two horses, you can see his sword falling out of its sheath.
- - Verified - In the scene with Aragorn tracking the hobbits footsteps away from the Orc battle, Aragorn's equipment is reversed - his sword is on his right hip, his dagger is on his left, etc.
ALSOLegolas's weapons are reversed, and all of their Lorien brooches are backwards. All of the little straps on Aragorn's clothing is reversed. Merry and Pippin have reversed brooches as well, and Merry's scar above his eye is on the wrong side.
For whatever reason, they reversed the entire scene. Perhaps they decided that the forest was on the wrong side, or something, so they swapped it. It starts when they are first riding towards the pile of dead Uruk-hai, and seems to end when Merry is picked up by Treebeard because Merry's scar is back in the right place (also at this time, Pippin has mysteriously lost the scrapes on his cheeks that were there two seconds before when he was picked up). - - Verified - When Aragorn tracks the footsteps of the Hobbits into Fangorn and he, and Legolas are standing with Gimli in between them staring into the forest, it is clear that this Gimli isn’t John Rhys Davies, but his dwarf double.
Treebeard/Fangorn
- When Merry and Pippin are riding on Treebeard, if you look closely at their hair when they are showing just their faces against the backdrop, you can see a slight tinge of green screen behind them.
- The movie flashes between battle scenes at Helm's Deep and Merry, Pippin and Treebeard. Helm's Deep takes place over the course of one night, yet when Merry and Pippin are shown, at the Entmoot and later at Isengard, it is daylight.
- - Verified - Why would Treebeard and the other Ents have to have a long discussion about whether the two Hobbits were actually Orcs? Gandalf would have told Treebeard that they are not Orcs when Treebeard took the Hobbits to meet Gandalf.
- - Verified - When Legolas is in Fangorn his brooch is the wrong way round, in the next shot it's back the way it should be.
- - Verified - When Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are in Fangorn and think they are about to be attacked by Saruman, all three turn around to attack him first. Gimli throws his axe at 'Saruman' and it shatters, but he is still holding his original axe (his spare is still hanging on his back) after all three have been disarmed.
Gandalf and Shadowfax
- - Verified - Shadowfax is known to be the father of all horses, but in the scene where Gandalf calls him, you can see that the horse portraying Shadowfax is female.
A note that was sent in - I would just like to elaborate on one of your spoofs.... In relation to the one where Shadowfax is referred to as the father of all horses but was really a mare....it was actually the *lord* of all horses, not father. However, the horse that played Shadowfax was indeed an Andalusian stallion called Demero. - Katherine S.
Another note: I realize that you have already got a letter saying that Demero was a MALE but I would like to point out that his double, Blanco, was also a STALLION. He was a thouroughbred cross. – Megan - First, after Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas meet up with Gandalf in the Fangorn, Gandalf summons Shadowfax. At this point, Gandalf has one of the elven cloaks from Lorien like the others, complete with brooch. He was not with the rest of them when they got theirs, but he may have gotten it at some other time. Who knows?
- When Gandalf's white horse makes its first dramatic entrance, you can see the ruts of a road in the distance. Given the absence of roads throughout the movie, this seems a bit out of place.
- - Verified - The blueish-white string that can be seen around the neck of Shadowfax (who is supposedly being ridden bareback) in one shot can also be seen tied around Gandalf's waist in a shot that closely follows it.
Meduseld/Theoden/
- - Verified - In Edoras, when Wormtongue is 'charming' Eowyn, his hand is clearly on her face and his person is only inches away. When Eowyn retaliates with words and gets Wormtongue's hand away from her, the next shot shows that they are over 6 feet apart from each other.
- - Verified - >When Gandalf and his companions first ride to Edoras we see a scene with Eowyn and Theoden. Eowyn is in a green dress. Then we see the 4 riders again and go directly to the bedroom where Theodred lies dead in his bed with Eowyn at his side. Now she has a white dress on. She couldn't have had time to redress and have a new hairdo done.
- In the scene when Gandalf and company first visit Theoden's hall, keep an eye on Gandalf's staff - it's in very different positions depending on the shot.
- - Verified - When Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli walk into Meduseld, Gandalf is seen arm in arm with Legolas, apparently leaning on the elf for support, as the doors of the hall close, Gandalf and Legolas turn and look behind them and Gandalf drops Legolas’ arm, but they are arm in arm again for the next shot.
- - Verified - When Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli enter the King of Rohan's chamber, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli start knocking down soldiers to protect Gandalf. When they have finished, there is a shot taken from behind and one of the beaten soldiers is lying on the floor playing with his hair.
- When Gandalf first confronts Theoden, he throws his cloak off his shoulders and it can be seen falling to his feet, it then shows another full shot and the cloak is nowhere to be seen.
- - Verified - When Theoden is standing outside Theodred’s burial mound he is originally holding a white flower with rounded petals, similar to a dogwood flower. He drops this flower on Theodred’s grave and says something about this particular type of flower growing on graves. A few moments later when he starts crying as he falls to his knees one can see the mound at the right of the screen is also covered in white flowers, however these only have about five petals each that are pointed and look more like lilies. They are clearly different flowers than the one Theoden had been holding.
- When Gimli is riding the horse on the way to Helms Deep the horse is supposedly going backward when he wants it to go forwards, yes? No, John-Rhys is giving the horse the signal to go backwards. Anyone with any knowledge of horse-back riding would notice this.
- When Gimli is talking to Eowyn about dwarf women, and his horse throws him, the axe in his hand goes flying. In the wide shot, the axe is shown going a fair distance from the horse, about 4 or 5 meters. In the shot of Gimli on the ground, the axe lands right next to him, only about 1 meter from where it flew out of his hand.
Wargs
- - Verified - When Saruman says to send out the Warg riders, the orc that is sitting to the side is obviously talking, but his line was cut while his mouth was still moving.
- Just prior to the attack scene from the Orc riders you can see Aragon's horse changes from brown to white, then back to brown again.
- - Verified - In the scene where Legolas kills the scout Warg, you first see the Warg jump off the cliff and knock a guy off his horse. A couple shots later you see a shot of Aragorn and Eowyn walking up. If you look closely, an arrow from Aragorn's arrow sling hits Eowyn in the head and she tries to move her head out of the way.
- - Verified - When Gimli is under the warg and the orc, as the other warg gets shot and falls on top of the pile, you can clearly see the "dead" orc’s arm move.
- - Verified - In the scene where Aragorn is fighting the goblin on a warg, he stabs the goblin in his neck. Later when Legolas and Gimli are talking to the goblin there is no blood on his neck and he is still able to talk.
- In the battle with the warg riders where Aragorn goes over the cliff, his sword is not in its sheath when he tumbles. Yet later, as he drifts up on the shore, his sword is sheathed and safe. Did he return it to the scabbard as he fell?
- Aragorn's wound on his shoulder changes appearance in the two shots of it that are shown after he falls off the cliff. The first time it looks quite nasty, the second time it looks like it's just blood smeared across his arm.
- After the attack by the wargs and Aragorn has fallen off the cliff, we see him floating in the river. When he reaches the bank, we see his wound is on the left arm. When he arrives at Helm's Deep and talks to Gimli whilst on his horse, his wound is on his right arm. It changes between shots from the river scene to the scene at Helm's Deep.
- After Aragorn falls in the river during the Warg attack he is found by Brego, Theodred's old mount. When he first mounts the horse it only has a halter & lead rope on. Later, after he sees Saruman's army marching on Helm's Deep & rides to warn King Theoden, the horse is outfitted with a bridle & saddle.
- When Aragorn's horse found him near the river, he puts his head to him and the horse is clearly only wearing a halter, with no bit in his mouth. In the close up shots of Aragorn that follow, you can see that the horse now has a bit in his mouth.
- When Aragorn is rescued by Brego, he first mounts with the lead rope on the left side. In the next scene, the lead rope is tied so Viggo can use it like reins. Unlike other people here, I see no saddle that Viggo uses. Besides, he's an excellent rider. Why does he need one? (by treesdontmove)
Helms Deep
- In the scene where they are showing an overhead view of Helm's Deep (when it is still light outside) you see a lot of people walking around. There is some fire on the edges of the walkway and a guy walks right through it and comes out unhurt.
- - Verified - In one of the first shots of Helms Deep, taken from a distance, there are four or five white stairs leading from the small side door. When Aragorn and Gimli sneak out of this door during the battle, there are no stairs.
- - Verified - When Eowyn arrives outside Helm's Deep with the Rohirrim people, her hair is worn straight and she is carrying nothing. When she arrives inside the walls of Helm's deep, her hair is pinned back and she carries a basket on her back. Though she may have had time to take the basket, when did she have time to pin back her hair?
- In the scene where the women and children are evacuated to the glittering caves under/behind Helms Deep, you can see a stalactite swaying back and forth.
- - Verified - In the scene before the battle of Helm's Deep when Legolas is arguing with Aragorn, his eyes are brown, rather than blue.
- - Verified - When Theoden is saying his poem about the horse and the rider, Gamling is putting the armor on his King but when the camera returns to a wide shot, he still only has his breast plate on.
- If you pay close attention when the rain starts in the battle at Helm's Deep, the makeup on the elves is running. Legolas in particular, when he is readying his bow in the beginning, has a ring of white makeup near his hairline.
- Note that the rain seemed to stop during various times of the battle. It was just foggy.
- Watch Legolas' quiver durning the battle. He runs out of arrows and you can see his quiver empty but then here and there it is full again.
- It seems as though the elves at the battle of Helms Deep aren't quite as coordinated and elegant as elves are rumored to be. During the Helms Deep battle scene, Aragorn is shouting commands to the elven archers. (Close up shot of Aragorn while it's still raining). If you look to the left of Aragorn, there is an elf who is repeatedly getting hit in the head by the ends of the arrows on the back of the elf next to him/her.
- That elf who got poked by the other's arrows when Aragorn was shouting commands, was also losing his arm cuff while fending off the poking arrows. I love his annoyed expression.
- Also at HD, the first elf to get shot who falls forward off the wall into the Uruk-hai, was already on the outside of the wall when he was hit. He was standing in one of the slots between battlements, but on the outside (for an easier death-fall, I suppose)
- - Verified - When the Berserker Uruk-Hai with the torch runs to the bomb to detonate it, Aragorn yells at Legolas to stop him. Legolas fires an arrow with yellow feathers, then you see the berserker hit by a long white fletched arrow, the kind the Lothlorien elves use. A second time, Aragorn yells to Legolas to kill him, and then again, the arrow shot by Legolas is not the Same type as the one that hits the Uruk-Hai.
- When Legolas surfs down the steps during the battle at Helms Deep, you can clearly see the two support wires coming from his shoulders as he nears the bottom.
- During the battle of helms deep, Uruk-Hai are storming the main gate. If you look carefully you can see Uruk-Hai popping up out of thin air in the right corner of the screen.
- Maybe this was intentional, but when the Urak-hai were heading up the ramp to the keep, a couple of the Urak-hai at the front of the march had their shields upside down.
- When the men are retreating into the halls of Helms deep, you can see an archer in the bottom right corner repeatedly shooting his bow without an arrow on the string.
- In the Battle of Helm's Deep immediately after Haldir dies, Aragorn, raged by the death of his friend and ally, grabs a ladder and throws himself into the seemingly endless sea of Uruk-hai soldiers. When the camera pans out in the following shot, we see Aragorn falling with the ladder, and in the distance (above the outer wall of the fortress) we can see what appears to be a water spraying device, to simulate rain falling.
- When the riders break out of Helm's Deep, you can see the hooves on the last horse clearly pass straight through the orc-corpses on the bridge.
- In the end, after Aragorn, Legolas and Theoden and his men have just come out on the bridge outside the keep, we see a wide shot of Gandalf and the Rohirrim charge down the mountain-side. The bridge is in the background, where the King and Aragorn and the riders should be visible, but they're nowhere to be seen.
- - Verified - In the shot where you see Gandalf and the support riders appearing in the east, you can see that the orc army's shadow is pointing towards Gandalf, i.e. towards the direction the sun is supposedly coming from.
- Throughout almost the entire film Shadowfax is a pure white horse, complete with an entirely white face. However, in the final scene at Helm's Deep, after the battle, Gandalf is riding a Shadowfax that now has a very distinct darker face and black muzzle.
- At the end of the film, when the heroes of the big battle are watching the lightning over Mordor, you can see in the background that the big hole in the wall on Helms Deep is gone.
Orthanc/Attack of the Ents
- When Treebeard and his friends are attacking Orthanc and Saruman is looking out to see what's going on, look at his hair and the way he moves. It seems like the shot is being shown in reverse.
- When the Ents are freeing the river to flood Isengard one Orc falls into the water but simply disappears without a splash.
- - Verified - In the scene where the Ents destroy the dam in Isengard, the water is falling in slow motion but the Ents are walking at their normal speed.
Rivendell/Arwen
- - Verified - When Aragon is dreaming the dream where he is kissing Arwen, you can see that Arwen has earring holes in her ears. None of the elves have their ears pierced.
- - Verified - When Aragorn is dreaming of Arwen, they stand and kiss. In the close ups, his hands are on her cheeks and jaw, but in the wider shot his hands are on her waist.
- - Verified - As Elrond is describing to Arwen what life would be like if she marries Aragorn you can see that when Arwen is mourning over Aragorn's death, if you look closely at Aragorn's hands, one of his fingers moves.
- - Verified - As Arwen's father describes his vision of her future with Aragorn, a few tears stream down both of Arwen's cheeks. Seconds later, we see her face dry and a new tear falls down her left cheek as she lays her head on Elrond’s shoulder, and her right cheek is dry.
- When Elrond is watching Arwen leave,he has his headdress on, but when Galadriel's talking, the headdress vanishes.
Black Gates
- In the scene where Sam and Frodo slide down the gravel, hide from the two soldiers, then are stopped from going into the gates of Mordor by Gollum, Gollum grabs Frodo's cloak and rubs it on his head. However, earlier when Sam had him on a rope, he was complaining about things made by Elves burning. Wouldn't he be screaming in pain if he grabbed Frodo's cloak, since it was an Elven cloak?
- - Verified - In the scene outside the Black Gates, Frodo throws his elf cloak over himself and Sam to hide them from the soldiers. As he slides down the rocks, he is wearing his backpack. When they stand up after, he is wearing his backpack. When they are covered with the cloak, no backpack. He doesn't take it off, yet it isn't visible when surely it would prevent the cloak from easily covering them both.
- In the scene where Sam, Frodo, and Gollum are at the Black Gate, right after they decide to try the other way into Mordor, the camera is positioned behind Frodo's right shoulder when he looks back at the Gate, and the wind blows his hair away from his face. White adhesive residue is visible in the crease where the hobbit ear meets the back of his head.
Faramir
- In the scene where Frodo and Sam are captured by Faramir, it begins with Sam cooking rabbits in a pot. He realizes that Frodo is missing, and he and Gollum rush to find him, leaving behind cooking equipment and backpack. All three are then captured. When released by Faramir however, Sam once again has his backpack, and proudly hitches it up when leaving.
- In the Oliphaunt scene, when the Oliphaunt starts going mad, you can see one of its feet pass right through a little group of southrons.
- - Verified - When Faramir and his men are looking at the map of Middle-Earth in Henneth Annûn, you can see that the plain of Dagorlad is actually spelled Dagorland on the map. An odd mistake, especially considering the fact that they got it right when they spoke of it in the first movie.
- When Faramir lays out the map of Middle Earth, the major city of Minas Morgul, which is located just to the east of Osgiliath, is missing.
- - Verified - In the scene in the storeroom where Sam is suggesting Frodo use the Ring to escape, Frodo is initially sitting in front of a barrel. Then Faramir arrives and Frodo and Sam are now sitting on a cloak and there are no barrels in sight.
- When Sam tells Frodo it's time to use the ring, the shot shows the light on Frodo over the left side of his face. When the shot changes to Frodo's right side, the light is over the right side.
- - Verified - When Faramir has his sword tip around the chain holding the ring the blade Faramir is holding is a dead blade i.e. it has no sharp edge.
Osgiliath/End
- At the end, when Gandalf says "The battle for Helm's Deep is over. The battle for Middle Earth is about to begin." You can clearly see his feet are in irons (stirrups). (very nice irons too)
- During Frodo and Sam's final scene in Osgiliath, you can clearly see that the chain Frodo is wearing has gotten longer. In several shots, the chain hangs down below the shot, so you cannot see the Ring, yet in other shots the chain is within the camera shot, and the Ring is clearly visible.
- When Frodo is going to the bridge to give the Ring to the Ringwraith, he is clearly only a few inches shorter than the men of Gondor. He should be half their size, at most.
- - Verified - Frodo and Sam are captured by Faramir's Rangers. Yet at Osgiliath Frodo draws Sting and threatens Sam with it. Didn't Faramir think to disarm his captives?
- At the end of the movie, when Gollum is talking to himself about how to double-cross Sam and Frodo, to the right in the distance you can see a red light flash. Another camera?
